Your Situation
People around you — well-meaning or not — are pushing you toward marriage soon after your shahada, as if it's the obvious next step.
What to know
There's no Islamic requirement to marry quickly after converting. Marriage is encouraged in Islam generally, but rushing into it specifically as a new Muslim is a pattern converts and scholars have widely cautioned against, not a religious obligation.
What you can do
- Know that this isn't a pillar or a requirement — establishing your prayer and settling into your new life come first. Marriage can follow in its own time.
- If you are genuinely considering it, use what's actually prescribed for major decisions: Istikhara, a two-rak'ah prayer asking Allah for guidance, which the Prophet ﷺ taught his companions for exactly this kind of decision (Sahih al-Bukhari 1166).
- Take the time you need. Feeling pressured by well-meaning community members is common enough among converts that it's openly discussed and cautioned against — wanting to wait isn't a lack of faith.
