The Quran addresses this almost directly, in a verse revealed about a companion whose own mother tried everything to make him abandon Islam.

What you can do

• Know the story behind this guidance: Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas's mother refused to eat until he left Islam. Allah revealed: 'But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them, but accompany them in this world with kindness' (Surah Luqman 31:14-15).
• Notice the balance in that verse: firm refusal on matters of faith, paired with an explicit command to remain kind, present, and supportive in worldly matters — not distance or coldness.
• Classical commentary on this verse (Ibn Kathir, Al-Qurtubi) describes that kindness as conduct recognized as good by both revelation and ordinary decent custom — a real standard, not a grudging minimum.
