Does Airplane Mode Affect Your Digital Qibla Compass?
The compass spins, freezes, or points somewhere wrong the moment you're mid-flight or off the grid. Airplane mode usually isn't the actual cause — here's what is, and how to still get a reading.
Airplane mode by itself doesn't break a Qibla compass — it disables cellular and Wi-Fi radios, not the sensors a compass actually needs. What usually causes the trouble is one of two separate things: either the app can't get your GPS coordinates because location services got turned off along with everything else, or your phone's magnetometer (the actual compass sensor) is being thrown off by nearby metal — which happens on a plane whether airplane mode is on or not.
Two Different Things a Qibla App Needs
It helps to separate what a Qibla compass actually depends on, because "no signal" doesn't affect both the same way:
Your coordinates (GPS) — used once to calculate the bearing to the Kaaba from your location. This can work with zero cellular or Wi-Fi signal, because GPS receives signals directly from satellites, not from your carrier.
Your phone's orientation (magnetometer/compass sensor) — used continuously to know which way your phone is currently pointing, so the on-screen arrow tracks with you as you turn. This has nothing to do with signal at all — it's a physical sensor reading Earth's (and anything nearby's) magnetic field.
Airplane mode can interfere with the first (if it also disables GPS on your specific phone). It has no effect on the second at all.
The Real Culprit: Your Phone's Magnetometer
If your compass needle is spinning, jumping, or clearly wrong while you're on a plane, that's magnetic interference — not airplane mode. An aircraft's metal body, its own systems, and nearby electronics all distort the local magnetic field far more than being on the ground does. Quick test: if the compass is unreliable specifically on a flight but works fine on the ground with signal off, that's confirmation — it's the metal around you, not the lack of signal.
How to Get GPS Working in Airplane Mode
On most Android and iOS phones, GPS and airplane mode are actually independent settings, even though turning on airplane mode often disables location services as a side effect by default:
1. Turn on airplane mode as usual (this stops cellular/Wi-Fi).
2. Go back into your phone's settings and manually re-enable Location/GPS — on most devices this toggle is separate from airplane mode and can be turned back on independently.
3. Open your Qibla app. It should be able to acquire a GPS fix from satellites directly, with no cellular or Wi-Fi needed.
This works because GPS positioning doesn't route through your carrier at all — it's a one-way signal from satellites that your phone's GPS chip receives directly.
Getting a Reading With Truly No Signal
Sometimes GPS itself is also unavailable — deep indoors, in some remote areas, or on some flights where location is fully disabled by policy. A few options:
Open the app before you lose signal. Most Qibla apps cache your last known location, so opening it once while you still have GPS or Wi-Fi lets it calculate your bearing, which then stays valid until you travel far enough to meaningfully change it.

Fixing a Spinning or Inaccurate Compass
If the needle won't settle, the fix has nothing to do with signal or airplane mode:
1. Move away from metal objects, speakers, or other electronics if possible.
2. Recalibrate — most compass apps prompt a figure-8 motion with the phone; do this a couple of times.
3. If you're seated on a plane or train, accept that magnetometer accuracy will be genuinely degraded by the surrounding metal, and rely more on your GPS-calculated bearing number (in degrees) than the live-moving needle.
Why this confuses people
"No signal" and "compass acting weird" tend to happen together while traveling, so it's natural to assume one causes the other. In reality they're usually two unrelated problems showing up at the same time — a GPS/connectivity issue and a magnetic interference issue — and each needs its own fix.
