Common Mistakes

Mistake: Assuming a straight line on a flat map is correct.
This is the most common source of confusion. On a flat (Mercator) map, drawing a straight line from, say, New York to Makkah looks like it should point roughly east-southeast. But the actual shortest path on a globe curves north — for much of North America, the real Qibla points northeast, sometimes even north-northeast, because that's the shorter arc over the curved surface of the Earth. Trust the calculated bearing, not what looks intuitive on a flat map.
Mistake: Ignoring magnetic interference.
Phone compasses are sensitive to nearby metal, magnets, and even other electronics. Holding your phone next to a laptop, speaker, or metal furniture can shift the reading by several degrees.
